Welcome to
The Wingman’s Path
Look at the Scoreboard
So I’m coaching an athlete the other day and came up with a great new practice to help you change your inner thoughts by first helping to identify them.
In my practice of coaching people to build their inner team, a question frequently asked is,
“What if I don’t know what my inner thoughts are?
Not surprising, considering so many different studies done over the last 20 years say the average human mind has approximately 50,000 thoughts in a day. Unfortunately, according to those same scientific studies, 80%, or 40,000 of those thoughts are negative.
With so many thoughts running through our minds, it’s often difficult to identify what’s going on up there. But one thing is certain, your thoughts, your inner voice is always speaking to you, it’s always saying something.
So is your inner voice helping you, or breaking you down?
Back to my athlete…
He was clear on the concept of wanting his inner voice to be helpful, but like many of us, wasn’t always clear on knowing what his inner voice was saying.
So here’s the practice I gave him.
I got it while watching Brett Ledbetter’s Ted X presentation on building your inner coach.
I had him imagine his team was losing and he just made a bad play. Then I had him visualize looking up at the scoreboard and instead of just seeing the score, picture seeing his inner thoughts flashing across the scoreboard for everyone in the arena to see.
Ledbetter’s point, is by externalizing our thought process, it can help us clarify our internal thoughts. Something about having others seeing your inner thoughts helps you to quickly alter them to be more positive.
I agree. I’ve been practicing it along with my client and it’s been working fantastically well. The idea of others witnessing my inner thoughts helps me get real clear on what I want those thoughts to be. From there, I’m able to rapidly choose a better feeling thought.
Give it a try, it might help you illuminate some of the darkness in your mind.
Oh, and be ready for your team to go on a winning streak.
Btw… The next Build Your Inner Team Class is Monday, February 16, 6:30PM. The agenda is manifesting using the Build Your Inner Team process.

- A notebook and pen to write with.
- One specific, measurable and achievable goal.

- To lose 15 pounds by May 31, 2015, instead of “to lose some weight”.
- To increase my business by 20% this year, instead of “to do more business”.

Pajama Party
I had a reunion of sorts this past weekend. Seven of us, friends since high school, got together at a friend’s house in Pipersville, Pa. We’ve remained friends for over 40 years and decided it would be a fun weekend to hang out, watch football, play some poker and just catch up. And it was.
Amazing we’ve been able to stay connected for so long. Through marriages, children and business successes, we’ve been there for all the fun times. That’s when it’s easy to stay friends, when everyone’s feeling like a winner. But these friendships have endured the tougher times as well, funerals of loved ones, sickness, divorces, lost jobs and business failures. Those are the times friendships are tested, and bonds are either strengthened… or broken.
It was great hanging with ‘my boyz’. Not that we all share the same believes or ideas, but old familiarities remind you to be a little more open, a little more understanding of what each of us have been through. See life through a different set of eyes. So when someone says something that pisses you off, you give him some leeway. You let things go. It’s certainly much easier when you’re in a good place, when the space between your ears is feeling peaceful.
Which brings me to my morning walk. As I was trekking through the cold, frozen woods around his house on Saturday morning, talking with my non-physical wingmen, or maybe just to myself, I came up with a great practice. I decided to think of each friend, and individually celebrate him, by reflecting on something positive about him.
Don’t get me wrong. My friends are not Mother Teresa. Like all of us they can be a pain in the ass at times. And there are certainly things about each of them that irritate me. But this morning’s practice wasn’t about that; it was about focusing on the positive, about feeling the love. And the love I felt. As I walked, I would deliberate on each friend and come up with something I could praise him for.
How he built a life around his strengths.
How he found his niche.
How he never gets rattled, and sees the good in each of us.
How he’s living life on his terms.
How strong he is to have made it through some difficult times.
How he always comes up with a new idea, always keeps moving forward.
Talk about raising your vibration, I felt great, my energy was high, and my heart was full. I started thinking, what would it feel like if we did this all the time, with our kids, our spouses, our co-workers, our in-laws, our neighbors and anyone else who crosses our path.
I urge you to give it a try it. Take one minute and think of different people in your life. It can be a loved one, a business associate, a client. Who it is, is not important. That you raise your vibration by thinking of something positive about them is.
Positively yours,
Michael
A Most Annoying Hug!
How can a hug between 2 people I don’t know be so annoying?
Being a South Jersey resident, and a lifelong Philadelphia Eagles fan, nothing was more irritating then seeing my Governor, Chris Christie, hugging Jerry Jones, the owner of the hated Dallas Cowboys. Especially after a Dallas win.
As many of you know from my blogs and my coaching, the problem is, when something irritates me, it gets my energy moving in a negative direction. And an object in motion stays in motion. Meaning… if I’m upset, it’s more likely I’ll continue being upset. And all over a stupid hug.
Certainly not the best way to “build my inner team”.
So I decided to change my energy by doing one of my favorite inner team building exercises. I celebrated the hug. I practiced feeling the elation that Chris Christie, a long time Dallas fan, and Jerry Jones, the owner felt when their team won.
And I practiced imagining it was my beloved Eagles who had won. And I practiced it again. And again. And again.
I practiced it until I actually was feeling joyous.
As if the Eagles really had won a big game.
The more I practiced, the more I was able to feel that happiness. It was then I was able to turn that negative energy into a positive vibration.
And that’s how you build your inner team.
Try it for yourself. Is something irritating you? Getting under your skin? Putting you in a bad mood?
Practice pivoting that feeling into something encouraging. Now you’re ready to start your day.
To learn how to do this for yourself and start building your own inner team, please join me for my class on Monday, January 19th. Details below.

And So It Begins…
Jan and I had a lot of fun this holiday season. From parties with friends, to business functions to mosh pits (yes, first time I’ve seen one) this was more socializing then we’ve done in a while. And with the coming of the new year, friends, acquaintances and new clients always ask me a variation of the same question.
How can I ________________?
How can I double my business? How can I get a better job? How can I lose weight? How can I improve my relationship with my _______? How can I start a relationship? How can I win the tiara? How can I make more money? To my favorite one… How can I have my best year ever?
My answer was the same every time.

No One Gets Out Alive.
I was reminded of this certainty of life this past weekend as my father-in-law passed away. He had been ill for some time, and while this wasn’t unexpected, physically he is no longer here. Much of what I read these days uses the term crossing over, as in, he is no longer in the physical realm, but he is still here with us.
Of that I cannot guarantee, until I myself “cross over”. However, I can tell you of my brother, who died more then 10 years ago and I’m certain I’ve not only felt his presence, but often have exchanges with him.
“Our dead are never dead to us, until we have forgotten them.” George Eliot
Are my conversations made up, memories of banters past? Or are they as real as my most recent discussion on the telephone this morning? While I may not actually speak them, I certainly feel them, trust them, and act upon them.
Yesterday, as we were in the process of “sitting shivah”, the weeklong mourning period in Judaism for loved ones, my wife felt like getting some air. Rather than just taking a walk around the block, she requested I take her to the woods. As we stepped outside, the sky seemed to open, and the rains started coming down. I asked if she would rather stay in, maybe do a meditation, but she was not to be deterred. We grabbed our raincoats, and off we went, “into the woods”.
As we walked, and breathed, and walked and breathed, a sense of calm came over her. It was good to see her returning to herself, especially after a weekend of mourning and crying, only interrupted by brief moments of her yelling at me. Yes, even with the rain falling down upon us, the walk had been a successful one.
But we were not done yet. As we started our way back, a huge hawk came out of the trees, with a wingspan that made it impossible to miss. As it circled above us, my wife looked up and surprisingly called out “Hi Dad”. It was strange, yet comforting, as this giant hawk stayed with us until we reached the end of our path, and it flew off into the rainy afternoon.
Coincidence? Maybe. So as we got back to the house, and returned to conversations with family and friends, I went to my computer to look up “seeing a hawk”.
Lo and behold, the first thing I saw, “The hawk is the messenger from the spirit world”. And while you, and my mother-in law for that matter, may require a bit more scientific proof, I choose to believe. As I said to my mother-in-law, doesn’t science have to include the possibility of the unknown?
I know seeing that hawk was very comforting to my wife, and for that, I need no proof.
Today’s Practice: For one minute, practice connecting with a loved one who’s crossed over. See how it feels. And remember, as neuroscience will tell you, you don’t have to believe, you just have practice.
May this holiday season bring you much comfort and loving memories,
Your Wingman,
Michael
World Cafe Live presents Gooch and The Motion.
What a great night it will be as my friend Gooch, and The Motion, will be rocking the upstairs at World Café Live on Jan 2, 2015. Doors open at 7 pm, show starts at 8 pm.
For those of you who don’t know Ryan ‘Gooch’ Nelson, he’s an inspiring musician. A car accident on 1/1/2004 left him a c7 quadriplegic with a broken neck. It was after losing all use of his legs and most use of his arms, that Gooch, turned struggle into triumph, and taught himself to play the slide guitar.
After much practice, his unique slide technique caught the ear of many in the music business, as he and his band have opened for the Zac Brown Band, Lynard Skynard, the Allman Brothers band and Tedeschi Trucks band. The man can jam.
Check out his web site here, http://www.goochnelson.com.
For those of you who don’t know World Café Live, it’s one of the top music venues in Philadelphia.
Gooch at World Cafe Live. It should be quite a night.
Tickets are $10 and can be purchased here, http://tickets.worldcafelive.com/event/700293-gooch-motion-philadelphia/
I’ve reserved a table for 10 for a pre show dinner at 7 pm, 6 spots remain. It should be fun night, and I’d love you, and your positive energy, to join me. Let me know as soon as you can.
Hope you have a great Thanksgiving with much to be thankful for,
Michael
